A Common Sense Winning Approach Most Gamblers Fail To Know
by Alan S. Samonte

What kind of gambler are you? Are you always in a hurry to play? Do you set a limit to your
losses? Are you disciplined enough to walk away when you need to? Do you bet on
anything? Do you have a definite winning plan? Are you the casino annuity for already a
long time?

I have been in a casino many times and I have met many kinds of personalities. Let me
share to you one of the most unforgettable person I ever met. She was a dowager in her
senior years. The first time I saw her was one early evening when she was playing
Blackjack with some others. She was a big bettor. I found it rare for an old woman to play
Blackjack so I was curious. I thought she was new to the casino but it turned out she was a
casino regular for a very long time already, but she went abroad for two years and now she’
s back on vacation. She had so much gambling money with her.

I sat beside her, and because she seemed friendly, so we got along well. She bragged to
me, she won.  She said she was losing slowly, but when it was already dawn, she came into
sudden winning sequences. She was very excited relating to me how she won bet after bet,
almost recouping all her losses in just a burst of a few minutes the money she lose in many
hours. I wanted to know more about her so I commented that she must have won big
already in the many years of her gambling. She answered me unhappily, saying her losses
could already buy a house and lot – plenty of them.

Then I noticed her kind of play - she was very aggressive, betting big on every hand,
without a definite focus, without a winning plan. She is one of those gamblers who have
played 30 years or more but has not learned any lesson. She was fumbling, a member of
the casino majority who never have any idea how to win.

She was in a hurry to play, really in a hurry. She did not want to be vacant even for a
second, or she would feel bored. When the cards at Blackjack were shuffled, she would go
to the slot machines. She would just estimate the time it takes to shuffle the cards, and if
she thinks it was time to deal the cards, she would run from the slot machine to the
Blackjack table. She was like a frantic passenger that is about to be left behind by her flight.

Sometimes she would bet at the Baccarat table nearby. She would not take a seat because
she had to monitor her Blackjack and Baccarat at the same time. The problem was the
Baccarat and Blackjack table were twenty feet apart, so she would run from table to table
like a tennis ball. Sometimes when she needed to decide her cards at Blackjack, the dealer
would wait for her because she was still there at the Baccarat game.

One time she lost all her cash so she cannot bet anymore. She went to the ATM machine,
but she did not have money in her ATM either. But she didn’t want to be vacant even for a
while so she called her daughter home for some cash. While waiting, she wanted to borrow
money from anyone, saying her money was coming anyway. But nobody wanted to lend her
money. Everyone believed it is a jinx to lend to a losing gambler. So she just sat at
Blackjack feeling very bored. A few minutes later her daughter and son in law arrived, so
she had cash again. Then she went again with her ways - frantically betting at any game as
though time was running out.

This woman was very temperamental. One time she ordered food from the waiter. But the
waiter was not able to get her order right so a wrong food was delivered. The mistake was
minor and could be easily corrected, yet she blew into rage. She cursed everyone. The pit
boss tried to appease her but she could not be appeased. Maybe she was just inflating her
anger because she had already lost big that evening. There was a time that I cracked a
joke on the table, one of those very rare times. Then she made a very unpleasant remark
that I caused her to loss. Since then I would not dare talk if she were in the table.

I say this lady’s playing style can never win in the long run. It pains me to see gamblers like
her, and I had wished a thousand times there was something I could do. Up to now it is still
a mystery to me why most gamblers are willing to lose thousand or millions of their hard
earned money, but are not willing to spend even a very little of their time learning how to do
it right.

Gamblers need not look very far to learn the correct way to gamble, and they do not have
to spend a fortune too. You only need common sense and that is all. Yet they are not only
sold to the idea but they are indifferent to it as well. They never seem realize the big
benefits of learning the right way to gamble. Their mentality seems to be that gambling
books are all hoaxes. How wrong they are. I wanted to change this kind of losing mentality
and I doubt how long it would take me to do it.
