Blackjack Expert on the Prowl – How Can You Tell?
by Alan S. Samonte

Is it right to show to every body that you are a Blackjack expert even if you are not? I don’t
think so. This kind of players really pisses me off – players who brag they are experienced
experts in Blackjack, and so they teach everybody how to play though in reality they are
bungling beginners. I think there is only one gauge whether a player is an expert or not,
and that is if he won in the game. If he was a loser to the game, I would rather that he
stayed humble. I rather those gamblers let their winnings do the talking for themselves. A
real expert will not tell you he is one; I am sure about that. He will even disguise himself so
that casino will not know suspect him as one.

I don’t know why some gamblers act this way - Why can’t they just concentrate on their
hand and not meddle on others’. I had played Blackjack a thousand times but it never
happened even once that I became a teacher at the table…except in the rare instances
where my help was sought. No matter how bad the player is beside me, I dare not teach
him. I always maintain that no other person can influence my result, not even the bungling
player beside me.

Let me share to you one of my encounters with this kind of player. He was a Korean
businessman who was in town for a business transaction. He was in his middle age, and
because he was fluent in English, it was easy for him to communicate with the locals. This
guy was a darling of the casino as he was a high roller. In fact, the casino reserved a
special room upstairs for his free stays. Every time he would feel sleepy, he would just go
upstairs and take a doze. All the foods he wanted would just be served in his room
whenever he wanted.

It was early evening when I first met the guy. I was playing Blackjack then with few others
when he sat beside me. He was a big bettor to my standard – in a table with a max limit of
4,000 pesos, he bet the maximum, while I only bet the 200 pesos minimum. He was very
aggressive in the table. I immediately sensed he was an unpleasant person - He was
teaching everybody what to do. He was telling everybody around that he was the most
expert player in the table. He said he had been playing the game for a very long time
already. He was very strict, a very bossy kind of person. Every time I would make a
decision, he would delay me for a while, as if to make sure I was making the correct
decision. What a piss off. The person really had bad manners.

The sad thing was the guy didn’t know how to play - he did not even know the Blackjack
basic play. He was very inconsistent with his decisions. I wondered where he got the nerve
calling himself an expert on a game he knew nothing about. Somehow, I suspected that this
guy must have lost too much playing this way, and so he made his losses as the gauge of
proclaiming himself an expert. Many times he tried counting the cards – and he was telling
everybody how to do it. What a mess. So I left early that evening, I was barely even and I
did not want to play in a table with such a person.

I returned to the casino early morning the next day. When I arrived I saw him still playing,
and this time he was alone in the table. He looked very weary - having taken no sleep the
whole night. And the sad thing was, he was only betting the table minimum of 200 pesos.
Because I saw him betting the limit of 4,000 pesos a hand before, so I got tempted to ask
him why he reduced his bet. I learned the sad thing: during the night when he had the table
all to himself, a very long sequence of bad runs hit him, and it wiped out his 400,000 pesos
away.

I decided to join him, and we both bet 200 pesos a hand. This time the man had changed -
He was not teaching me anymore what to do. He no longer was bossy too - He was clearly
mellowed by his losses. As the game dragged on, he observed something in my play – I
was fast and consistent with my decisions. Then to my surprised, he asked me what to do
with his cards! He suddenly humbled himself against me. Since it is my pleasure to teach
other gamblers to play right, I taught him the fine points of the game. I showed to him his
mistakes, and explained to him how much additional losses he would incur committing those
mistakes. After that, every time he would make a decision he would consult me. He finally
submitted himself to the right authority.

I say he was a great student and a fast learner. Even then, he was not able to regain back
his 400,000 pesos loss. A few minutes later, he went upstairs for his much-needed sleep.
When he returned in the afternoon, he invited me for some coffee at the coffee bar. From
then on, we become friends.

Are you this kind of gambler? If you are then I rather you quit acting this way. Believe me,
nobody would appreciate you doing it. I rather you concentrate on your hand so you would
not commit mistakes on it. If you are really a Blackjack expert, you do not need to
announce it – let you winnings do the talking.
