The Samonte Gambling System – The Making of the Book
by Alan S. Samonte
I cannot forget the date – it was September 26, 2006 when I started writing the book. I was
in my sister’s house that time visiting my mother, when that big event came. It was a cloudy
afternoon and the day was bright though the sun was nowhere to be found. It was a typical
nice cloudy day in our place.
I did not know it was to be that day that I would finally start writing the book as I did not have
any plan to do it that day. Years before that, I have always craved to write the book but I
just didn’t find the momentum yet. Maybe I was just too lazy, or maybe I wasn’t yet prepared
to share in writing to other gamblers the topic which I considered my self technically
inclined. Though I have already shared what I know to a small circle of my gambler friends,
but I know that putting it in writing would be a much different things since I would be
reaching a bigger audience.
I remember I was playing a game in the computer for already maybe about an hour when I
felt very bored. Then it happened. It suddenly occurred to my mind to finally write the
book. “Why not start now?” I finally said to myself. In the last several months I have
glimpsed some opportunities in the internet. I had already gained basic knowledge on
affiliate marketing, on writing blog, in accepting freelance writing assignments, or on writing
e-book. So I decided that if I have to start an internet opportunity I might as well write the
book since I was sure I would be able to offer valuable information to a certain group of
people – casino gamblers.
So I open the word processing program and started pounding the keyboard. The book didn’
t have a name yet, but I was sure it would be about casino gambling - about how anyone
can consistently win in the casinos using a hit and run approach in exploiting the weakness
in gambling events. The first chapter I wrote was “The Mistakes Gamblers Make” which
eventually became “The Nine Mistakes Gamblers Make” – the chapter seven of the book.
My mind was very fast that time so that my fingers were unable to catch up the ideas it was
generating. I brainstormed about all the possible mistakes any gambler could commit in the
casinos, and in about an hour I was able to come up with about a hundred possible
answers. All of them were based on my personal experiences and observations with other
gamblers. Then at about an hour later the draft of the chapter was through. But it was
loosely written, draft as it was. There were so many underlines in red and green in almost
all of the words, either because of grammar or spelling mistakes. I expected that since I did
not edit my work as I wrote. I just wrote as fast as I could whatever would come to my mind,
unmindful of the spelling and grammar errors I was making all along. This technique I
learned many years before from an author I could no longer recall.
So that was what I did everyday in the next few days – adding contents to my draft, writing
as fast as I could on whatever I could think of until I had written maybe about 20,000 words.
Then it was time to edit and revise it. I found the truth then that it is more difficult and time
consuming to edit a book than to write it. The revising work took a hundred as much time
as in actually writing it. Then it became acceptable to me, though I know it was still far from
perfect. I knew it wasn’t satisfactory yet, but for the mean time that was all that I could do. I
did my best, but I knew my best were not even good enough for professional book critics.
The original 100 or so gambler mistakes I had thought of were reduced to only nine, and I
now named the chapter as ‘The Nine Mistakes Gamblers Make”. The word count had been
greatly reduced to only about 8,000 words. The chapter tells of fatal errors gamblers have
been committing all along without their awareness on it, which had caused them so much
misery. It also contains narratives of my experiences as a casino gambler in 20 years. I
believed the stories would reinforce my arguments in each of the mistake I theorized.
My experience in writing the first chapter led me to discover my serious failings as a writer.
There was no problem in the organization, or in the flow of thought, or in the depth of
ideas. My problem was mostly on grammar and sentence structure. Every paragraph was a
struggle. I have to return to grammar books every time I write to make it sure I was
expressing my ideas as smoothly as an American writer can. But even then I knew I could
not fully capture the English tone.
I know the reason for that - because I am not a native English speaker. It’s really different
when you write in a language not your own – it shows. In my case, I had learned English
only from books in my self study, so there were many idiomatic expression and verbs
phrases that I found hard to use. I also had so much trouble in the consistency of verb
tenses plus you add the fact that I did not have any formal training in writing. This is the
reason why it took me a long time to finish the book.
So that was what transpired in the earliest stage of writing the book. Since the book was
finally published, it changed me a lot in terms of accepting and committing responsibilities
to my chosen niche. I just felt there was a new obligation placed in my shoulders that I have
to bear forever.
