Who Do You Blame If You Don’t Win?
by Alan S. Samonte
It was early evening, and this was my second time in this casino – the first time was about
six hours ago. I was playing Blackjack in a full table, and as usual, I was sitting at the first
base. (The first and the last base are my two favorite places. For non-Blackjack players,
the first and the last base are the first and the last chairs in the semi circle sitting
arrangement of the game.) The casino was very crowded, rightly so, because this casino
was in the heart of the city.
We have played for about two hours already, and while I was slowly getting ahead, the rest
of the players were having bad streaks. The dealer did not have a good run either but
because all the rest were bungling, so could be the reason for their bad streak. So one buy
one the gamblers quit and went looking for another table, until there were only two of us
left.
The other guy was sitting in the fourth seat, and while I was a little ahead in the game, he
have lost much already. (At that moment I have won about 7,000 pesos.) He seemed
friendly and for a while, we talked about trivial things. The table minimum was 500 pesos
and the max was 8,000. We both bet the minimum limit of 500 pesos.
Then it happened - I was dealt 10 and 6, and he was dealt 11. The dealer had seven
showing. The mathematically correct decision to do with my cards is to hit. Although both
hitting and standing were losing decisions, but hitting would increase my chance of losing a
little. At that time, the guy made a suggestive remark that it is better to stay than to hit. Of
course he was wrong, so I hit my cards nonetheless. I was dealt a ten (the card that he
needed) – and so I busted. The dealer took my chips and my cards. When the guy doubled
on his eleven, he got 5, a total of sixteen. Then the dealer dealt a card to himself, a ten, for
a total of seventeen. The dealer won.
The guy was clearly irritated though he tried not to show his irritation. He reminded me I
had just made a blunder hitting 16 against seven. He tried to tell me in friendly tone that the
game needs skill and experience to win. He said that he once was a newbie to the game
too, and he had learned his lessons the hard way. He said that it is good for beginners (like
me) to listen to pros (like him). I was like giggled with what he said, but I dare not laugh.
The man never had the slightest idea who was teaching to play.
Then a group of beautiful ladies came to our table – five gorgeous ladies. The ladies did
not look like showgirls or gamblers to me but by the way they acted, they were like long
time casino regulars. He was very popular with the ladies, and some of the ladies sat on his
lap. The ladies were very noisy giggling. He told the ladies he lost much already because
there were some bad players around. He was referring to me of course after all there were
are only two of us in the able. The girls started eyeing me differently, as if I was the villain
to their hero. It was the first time the ladies saw me, so it was not hard for them to believe
their Romeo that I was the bad guy.
Then the game continued on, and the ladies just stayed in our table. But by struck of
coincidence we were dealt the same cards again. I got 16 again and he got 11, and the
dealer got seven. This time the guy thought I would stay with my cards, thinking that I had
already learned a lesson. Nonetheless, I hit again, and I busted again, getting a card of 10,
the card he needed. When he doubled on his 11, he got five again, a total of 16 – a losing
hand. When the dealer dealt his second card, it was 10 a total of 17, the dealer won again.
This time the man could not hide his disgust anymore. His belief that I caused his losses
grew even more. He turned away and grumbled. He cursed me though he did not make his
voice loud, as he really felt bad with the situation. All the ladies sympathized with him. I just
ignored him - he did not cause physical pain to me anyway. I did not want heat so I scoop
my chips and went looking for another table. The man felt great delight seeing me stood
up, like he was relieved of a pain on his neck.
Situations like these are not new to me. In the many instances that I had played blackjack
with other players, this had happen to me again and again. Why do gamblers do this? Until
this time I cannot understand why gamblers have to resort to immaturities just to justify their
losses. They blame the dealer, someone else in the table, their spouse, their boss…
anyone in sight. When will the gamblers ever learn? When will they act like a logical adult?
I remember there was times before that I had blamed someone else of my losses, but it
happened only a very few times, when I was still new to gambling, and I had learned to
correct myself. Since I had developed the Samonte Gambling System, I had learned to
behave the right way. I never let my emotion intervene - I was like a robot, programmed
never to deviate playing by the rules.
If you are a blamer – discard this behavior because it is wrong. It is also not good for our
heart. It is easy to stop blaming if you are willing… it is just a mind over matter. Keep your
cool and always be logical. Always bear in your mind that reality wise, the other player with
you, no matter how bad a player he is, is not causing you any losses. Blaming others
gamblers is just not right.
